Body Harmony

What Is Body Harmony and How Can It Help You?

If you occasionally pay attention to your body or your feelings you might notice that sometimes you feel good and sometimes you don’t. Body Harmony is about increasing the frequency and quality of your ‘feeling good’ times.

You might also have noticed that your outlook on life or certain situations can feel pretty bad. Body Harmony is also about developing a better outlook.

Maybe  you occasionally feel uncomfortable or restricted in your body, like you can’t breathe freely or your back hurts – Body Harmony helps with this type of situation also.

In fact, Body Harmony has the potential to improve your relationship to most things, because it responds directly to your body, and changes to your body can help you see all sorts of things very differently.

For many people it’s not always obvious or apparent how their body is  influencing their outlook. It is though. Body Harmony helps people who are willing to explore how things could be different. This happens by partnering with a Body Harmony® practitioner. The Body Harmony® practitioner helps you by using their skill set in the service of your intentions. This help puts clients in touch with more of their own resources. Which is essentially another way of saying that clients get to discover what good things are available just under the surface of their immediate awareness.

One-on-one experiences with a Body Harmony® practitioner are commonly referred to as Body Harmony® sessions or Body Harmony treatments. You can book a treatment with either Duncan or Gina by email or calling +61 411 399 873. In these sessions the practitioner works to help you by using a variety of skills including touch, discussion, observations of movement and other tools. Learning to listen well is a fundamental skill any Body Harmony® practitioner is required to foster. Clients take these sessions fully clothed and much of a Body Harmony session occurs laying on a massage table.

You might engage a Body Harmony® practitioner if you felt that these types of benefits could help you –

  • Release tension, aches and pains
  • Restore natural body movement to improve function, posture and presentation
  • Accelerate physical and emotional healing
  • Resolve issues held in the body to allow enhanced health, harmony, vitality
  • Improve communication and relationships
  • Breathe with greater ease
  • And much more…

Here are some examples of sessions.

Example 1 – ‘A Pain In the Arm’

My client broke her elbow in May last year. She had wire, pins and rods in to put it back together until it knitted. About 3 months later the bone was mended but because of her age they wouldn’t remove the pins. Over the ensuing 6 months she was getting more pain in her arm until finally the pins were removed this week. She came straight from hospital to me.

In the ensuing session she felt her arm starting to realise that the pins and wires were no longer there, and her bodily response was of a physical relaxation in her shoulder and arm, but not only that, we saw and both felt so many other parts of her body relaxing and realigning as a consequence: muscles lengthening, bones energetically reconnecting to her elbow again, like so much of her body had repelled from this foreign thing in her body, and now could reconnect.

As she walked, she felt taller, her scoliosis straightened, her chest opened, the rotations of her shoulders were balanced where before they had been quite differently rotated. She felt and looked more confident.

hands-on-heartSo many times our bodies will compensate for an experience, and when that experience has changed we can continue acting as if it were still there. (Bodies can be quite cautious about trusting something new).

She felt that if she hadn’t had the session it would have taken so much longer for her body to realise the changes. The session brought attention to something different, and she then took the opportunity and ran with it.

Example 2 – A Recovery From Food Poisoning

I had endured a serious bout of food poisoning. During a Body Harmony® seminar that followed shortly after my illness, I became aware that everything was moving reasonably well in my body with the exception of my abdomen. My abdomen was making it hard to breathe. I had no appetite. I was losing muscle mass and exercising felt harder than usual.

When it came my turn to receive a treatment I asked to be touched around my abdomen. My practitioner, Gina Carruthers, found a tight mass around my belly button. Any movement in excess of its small parameters registered as pain, however my practitioner applied gentle yet definite jiggling motions suggesting soft movement to an area of obvious tightness. don-hands-onMy nerve and a pocket of my intestines had become very tightly bound, courtesy of my food poisoning, and charcoal, slippery elm and other supportive concoctions had helped, but not effected a complete recovery.

This compacted residue was, I was aware, compromising my overall well-being. But now, as I lay supine on the table, these compressive effects were beginning to lift. I felt a surge of sensation run down the back of my left leg. My breathing became easier and fuller, I could feel the tight mass in my abdomen changing – these gentle jiggles were allowing a ‘lifting’ sensation to pervade and release the painful and compacted area.

My practitioner then had me lay on my side, and more of this mass was addressed from a different relationship to gravity. And the relief expanded. I declined the request of my practitioner to roll again onto my back as my whole body was now experiencing such a remarkable sense of well-being and relief, I just couldn’t consent to changing anything at this moment…

In just a few short minutes I felt able to roll again onto my back. I became aware of the distinct sense of needing to burp. The unravelling was now allowing what was trapped in my abdomen to start to move again. The sense of relief grew.

Everything changed from this point. My appetite returned. It was easy to breathe. And once again I experienced the value of having the benefit of a ‘hands-on’ approach for restoring me to good health.

Example 3 – A Break-up and A New Possibility

A young woman was suggested to come and see me in the midst of a painful relationship break-up. In the second Body Harmony® session she had we discussed the idea of ‘body responses’. I asked her to consider what she would like to achieve from the treatment. She answered this question, at the end of which I asked her had she noticed how she adjusted her posture (her particular body response) in answering the question. She said she noticed that she sat up straighter and her upper chest opened up, and her breathing was easier. To my eye this was indeed true.

treatment3Minutes later in our discussion she again adjusted her posture, however this time she collapsed her chest, with her head leaning forward and arms folded. I asked her if she was aware of what she just did, and this began the process of this young woman becoming more aware of her body responses that were quite apparently connected to the specific thoughts she was having.

From this short discussion came a wealth of information, which made the idea of where we might start the ‘hands-on’ part of the session much clearer. The results were meaningful to the client because they gave her an awareness of what she was doing to her body under the effect of specific thoughts, and most importantly gave her a sense of choice. Her body relaxed and re-aligned itself during the session making her a body seemingly less prone to ‘depression’ as defined by her specific postures.

Example 4 – The Pentagon, 9/11 and A Remarkable Transformation

There has been one event in my life that affected my body in a way like none other: the attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Standing near the window of my third-floor office that morning, I felt and heard a mega explosion and I saw a huge blanket of fire race through the entire first-floor area below me, coming completely through the roof and crossing about 250 feet in less than a second.

The shock wave from the explosion hit me from left to right, and I thought a huge truck bomb had exploded within a couple hundred meters of me. I learned later that the plane had passed immediately underneath my office, passing perhaps within 10 feet of me.

During the days, weeks, and months that followed, I would relive that moment again and again, literally hearing the explosion, feeling the shock wave, and seeing the blanket of flames. This experience would come upon me suddenly, with no warning, and would repeat itself over and over in a cycle. Sometimes it was only three revolutions of the cycle; at other times I was reliving the moment in a constant loop of 30 or more “explosions.” It was most concerning when I was driving my car because I would literally be seeing my office and the blanket of flames rather than the road on which I was driving, and I was barely aware of the steering wheel in my hands.

In October 2004, I had the good fortune to do a Body Harmony® session with Alexandra Rose in Paris, France. During the session, I was wearing loose clothing and lying comfortably on a massage table while Alexandra gently touched different parts of my body — my leg, my back, my shoulder — and the session was so relaxing that I fell asleep. Immediately afterward, I felt a sense of contentment and peace.

However, it was during the following week that I realised it was physically impossible for me to relive 9-11 in my body. I could remember 9-11, but I could no longer experience it.

I am grateful for that Body Harmony® session, the results of which have been profound and lasting. To this day, even though I remember 9-11 with exceptional clarity, I no longer literally hear the explosion, feel the shock wave pass through my body, or see only the blanket of flames before my eyes, blocking out all else. As a matter of fact, I was so impressed that I trained to become a Body Harmony practitioner myself, after retiring from the military in 2011.” – Sylvia Moran
